BRADENTON, Fla. — A walk isn’t just for exercise. At Tom Bennett Park in Bradenton, dozens are walking to leave a memory.

  • MADD, Manatee Sheriff's Office host annual walk
  • The walk brings awareness to the consequences of drunk driving
  • Every year, over 10,000 people nationwide are killed by a drunk driver

On Saturday, the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office came together for their 4th annual walk to remember those who were lost and give people the tools to be responsible.

Organizers say every year, over 10,000 people are killed by a drunk driver in the country — and 1,000 deaths are from Florida.

“I miss him every day. There's not a day that goes by where i don’t think about him,” said Melana Mote.

In 2012, Mote's brother, Joshua, died when he was hit by a drunk driver in his car.

The accident left his brother disabled and his mother in the hospital for three weeks.

“My family hasn’t been the same and that all started on a day when someone decided to drive drunk,” Mote said.

Mote’s family said they’ll never be able to get Josh back, but if they can help others save a life, it makes life worth living.

“People need to be more careful,” Mote said. “Call an Uber, leave your keys at home, it will save a life.”
