TAMPA, Fla. — A scooter rider involved in a June 20 collision with a tractor-trailer has died from his injuries. He will be laid to rest on June 30.

John Michael Edgerton, 33, was an accountant for Metropolitan Ministries. He died June 26, nearly a week after being sent to the hospital with serious injuries following the collision on S. 20th Street and Stuart Street in Tampa.

Police said Edgerton was riding an e-scooter in the far right lane near the curb when he veered into the path of a northbound tractor-trailer.

Edgerton's coworkers said he was a generous person who was well known throughout Metropolitan Ministries, where he’d worked for the past year and a half.

“He has been a bouncy person, full of energy and life," said Rev. Beth Bostrom, Director of Spiritual Formation for Metropolitan Ministries. "He might be going to get checks signed or to deliver invoices across campus, but he brings a lot of energy and life with him wherever he goes and he always had funny stories.”

Edgerton’s fiancé said they planned to get married early next year.

“When I looked in his eyes, I saw the most kind, gentle soul that I knew would show me that true love exists," said fiancé Melissa McGrath in a statement. "I had planned to tell him that when we exchanged vows.”

Bostrom said Edgerton loved talking about his one-year-old daughter.

“He loved his daughter a great deal, and yes, talked about her a lot and about every little milestone she was achieving, and he shared all of the joys of being a dad and watching her grow and he was very proud of her,” said Bostrom.

When he was seriously injured in the crash, his co-workers hoped he’d pull through.

“Every bit of the news has been difficult," Bostrom said. "And it’s just been a lot for the folks who were closest to him to hold and it’s been a lot for the whole team to absorb."

Edgerton's funeral is set for June 30 at 5:30 p.m. at Gonzalez Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking people to donate to Metropolitan Ministries.
