COCOA, Fla. — A Brevard County man is facing a murder charge in the killing of Tashaun Jackson, a missing Brevard County mother whose body was found a county away earlier this month.

Joshua Taylor was booked into the Brevard County Jail early Wednesday morning.

Taylor is facing three felony charges in connection to the slaying of Jackson. Cocoa Police detectives arrested the 30-year-old man at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at his mother's home on Fay Street without incident, authorities said in a statement.

Jackson, a mother of four, was reported missing by family February 9 after failing to return from a trip to a 7-Eleven near her Brevard County home.

Surveillance video also showed that she met with an undisclosed person. Police have not yet said whether that person is Taylor.

Police and family turned to the public for help in her search. On February 15, her body was found in a pond in a remote, rural area of Osceola County.

According to Cocoa Police, an Osceola County Sheriff's Office helicopter found Jackson's body after receiving a tip to search the desolate cattle ranch area. Detectives think Jackson was killed after leaving the 7-Eleven in Cocoa.

Court records show Taylor was arrested last year in an attempted rape and burglary case involving Jackson.

A Cocoa Police arrest affidavit from the incident states the victim, which family said to Spectrum News 13 was Jackson, told investigators that Taylor is known to carry a concealed weapon, and she was "afraid of retaliation leading to her getting hurt."

Days leading up to Jackson's disappearance, the mother of four was reportedly "looking over her shoulder" after giving a deposition against Taylor, her family says.

Jackon's aunt Sharon Jones-Smith said the family wishes Jackson was protected.

“The way we handle situation, and the way we handle crimes against women, we've got to do something better," Jones-Smith said,. "If we want people to report crimes, we need to put them into position that they feel safe”

Taylor is facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held without bond and cannot make any contact with Jackson's family.

"We believe that Joshua Taylor calculated the kidnapping. He kidnapped her, he took her to Osceola County, and basically, he murdered her," Chief Mike Cantaloupe said.

Her family and the police held a joint news conference Wednesday morning at the Cocoa Police Department.

A funeral for Jackson is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at East Coast Christian Center on Merritt Island.
