FLORIDA — Prepackaged chicken salad products sold under several brands in Florida are being recalled because they may contain the listeria bacteria.

  • Ready-to-eat chicken salad products sold in Florida
  • Class I recall, which means it has a high health risk
  • Consumers urged to throw out product or return it

Hollywood, Florida-based Lean Culinary Services produced the 223 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken salad under the recall, which was announced Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture

USDA inspectors detected the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria Monday.

The Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as Class I, which it describes as a high health risk; ingestion of the product could lead to serious adverse health consequences or death.

There have been no reports of illness or injury, the FDA said.

The recalled items were produced on February 12 and include:

  • 14.9-oz. plastic tub packages containing "classic chicken salad Made with Bell & Evans White Meat Chicken" with a "best by" date of 2-17-19. The label includes a logo for Whole Foods market.
  • 8-lb. plastic bags for use behind the deli counter containing "classic chicken salad Made with Bell & Evans White Meat Chicken" with a "sell by" date of 2-19-19.
  • 7.8-oz. plastic tub packages containing "DeliverLean Classic Chicken Salad" with a "use by" date of 2/17/19.
  • 5.5-oz. plastic tub packages containing "DeliverLean Chicken Salad Bento Box" with a "use by" date of 2/17/19.

The products under the recall have the establishment number "P-46167" inside the USDA inspection mark and were all shipped to Florida locations, the FDA said.

Listeria bacteria can lead to listeriosis, which can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. People most susceptible are older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and babies.

Anyone who has the recalled product should not eat it but throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.
