BUNNELL, Fla. — Flagler County's The Sheltering Tree will open again for another cold night tonight, and the center says it needs help to accommodate those it serves.

  • Cold Weather Shelter tonight in Bunnell
  • Sheltering Tree hosts the shelter
  • They need warm clothes, hygiene products for donations

The family assistance center is using the First United Methodist Church of Bunnell as a cold weather shelter this week, starting at 5:30 p.m. tonight and Wednesday night. The Sheltering Tree is the only cold weather shelter in Flagler County.

Each person who stays at the shelter gets a cot, a hot meal at night, and a hot breakfast before leaving the shelter in the morning.

"Flagler County is a really good county to live if you can afford, and the people who live on very little money can’t afford it. So if they are staying in cars or staying somewhere else, they need a place that is warm," said Susan Bickings, Chair of The Sheltering Tree.

For the last 10 years, the 150 volunteers at the The Sheltering Tree open the doors everytime the temperature is predicted to dip below 40 degrees. They can house a maximum of 32 people.

If you wish to help, the shelter is in need of long-sleeved shirts and sweatshirts, jackets, hats, scarves, new socks and underwear and sturdy shoes in all sizes.

They also need new hygiene products. Items can be brought to the First United Methodist Church of Bunnell, on Pine Street.

You can also go to the Sheltering Tree website to make a monetary donation.
