DUNNELLON, Fla. — An investigation is underway in Marion County after possible human remains of a couple reported missing were found at a home in the Lake Tropicana community.

  • Possible human remains found at Marion County home
  • Layton and Donna Underwood called "missing endangered"
  • Investigators are looking for couple's missing vehicle

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the possible human remains were found in the past few days at a home on the 18000 block of SW 47th Street.

A family member of Layton Underwood, 75, and Donna Underwood, 69, asked deputies to conduct a well-being check on the couple on Sunday after being unable to make contact with the Underwoods.

Both haven't been seen since around Christmastime and are described as “missing endangered” by the Sheriff’s Office.

In a news release, deputies say they did not find the couple there when they arrived at the SW 47th Street home. But during the investigation, deputies found possible human remains on the property of the home. Forensic technicians, the Medical Examiner, and the University of Florida's C.A. Pound Human Identification Lab also responded to the home in connection with the investigation.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, authorities are in the process of recovering the remains, which they will work to identify.

Investigators say they’re searching for the Underwood’s vehicle missing from their home: a 2014 White VW Passat S with the Florida tag GXRD85.

A relative of the Underwoods, Allyn Shane Gilbert, 53, is thought to be driving the vehicle, deputies say. He’s also listed as “missing endangered” by MCSO due to “concerning statements he’s recently made,” officials reported.

Anyone with information on the case or on Gilbert’s location is urged to contact Marion County Det. Aaron Levy at 352-368-3546 or Crime Stoppers at 352-368-STOP.
