Close friends and family of a mom and her young son who died after six people were shot in Sanford one year ago marched Tuesday night to remember their loved ones — and send a message.

Sanford detectives say Tina Herring’s ex-boyfriend, Allen Cashe, stormed into her home last March 27 and shot her, her father, her two young boys and then two potential witnesses — a man walking down the street and a girl at a bus stop.

Herring and one of her sons did not survive.

“She didn’t deserve this, and neither did her child, and no one else for that matter, for a senseless act,” said LaDasha Beasley, a friend of Herring’s.

A year later, the victims’ friends and family marched through Sanford to keep their memories alive.

"We still carry her in our spirits, and her death is not in vain — it’s not in vain,” Beasley said.

They marched to not only remember the ones they lost, but to raise awareness about domestic violence and prevent others from enduring it.

“For people to be aware and to speak out, because no doubt in my mind, I knew she was going through anything like this,” said Maqueta Jones, a friend of Herring’s.

“She was a happy person. She didn’t let things bother her, and if it was bothering her, she didn’t let it show.”

Court records and evidence show Cashe and Herring had a history of domestic violence.

“You don’t have to endure domestic violence, whether it’s verbal or physical abuse. There’s so many places that you can call,” said Starregina Lawrence, the march’s organizer.

Herring’s family and friends say they’re planning another gathering to promote domestic violence awareness in October, which is domestic violence awareness month.

Cashe is facing a trial on murder and attempted murder charges in January 2019. He remains in custody on no bond and is due back in court in June.
