MELBOURNE, Fla. — It's the most magical night of the year, and "Santa Claus" is gearing up for his final holiday celebration.

For almost a quarter-century, William and Sadie Peters have gotten deep into the Christmas spirit.

"We love to see the people come by, and the children," said William Peters, who goes by "Santa Claus" each year.

"We have Santa in a sled being pulled by his reindeer," he said, as he showed off the slew of decorations he and his wife set out.

The Peters have been going all out for the holidays since 1996.

"Mrs. Claus said, 'Let's do this,' and that's where it began," William Peters said.

All of it has been collected over the years and proudly displayed outside their Thomas Barbour Drive home. There's so much, in fact, that the couple gets started well before Thanksgiving each year.

"It just kind of evolved," Sadie Peters said. "He wants to do this, and I'm right there along with him."

Each year on Christmas Eve, hundreds of cars come by to gaze at their bright, colorful, winter wonderland, complete with snow.

"One year, my son tried to get here and didn't until after 11 o'clock," Peters recalls. "(It was) bumper to bumper."

But the Peters wouldn't be the Clauses if they didn't do one big thing that night: Give out gifts to the kids who come by.

"We've had children come when they were children, and now they are grown children," Sadie Peters said.

"Kris Kringle" and his wife also celebrate the holidays year-round. Their collection of holiday goodies can be found inside their home. Tiny houses and streetscapes, decorations and trains fill a room built to display it all.

But this year is a bittersweet time for the couple. Peters just had a big birthday, and the couple thinks it's time to close up shop.

"Santa turned 90, so he's retiring," William Peters said.

So it may be the end of an era, but their holiday spirit will endure. The Peters' holiday display is at 605 Thomas Barbour Drive in Melbourne.
