MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Contrary to their previous announcement, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will not require a makeup day at Butler High School in January to make up for the classes missed after October's tragic shooting.

CMS is now saying the proposed January date was too soon. The January date was announced this week, along with snow makeup days.

  • A January makeup day is no longer required for Butler High School students.
  • CMS originally said it would be on January 22, but now at a later day they will have "students, families, staff and supporters" at a "shared campus teach-in."

It got a pretty negative reaction from parents and students, saying it was too soon and kids were still grieving. Before CMS officially announced the makeup day would no longer take place, a former teacher said that if a makeup day were to happen, it should be used for emotional support.  “Well let them use it as an emotional support day and make it up that way. That might give some of the kids time to grieve and to work with counselors," said Gregg Birun, a former teacher.

On October 29, 16-year-old Jatwan Cuffie shot and killed classmate Bobby McKeithen at the school. Students were put on lockdown and then left school early.

In a statement, CMS said, "Butler High School make-up day will not be January 22, 2019, as previously announced. A new date and further details for Butler High School will be announced soon. On this yet to be announced future date, Butler High School students, families, staff and supporters plan to learn together during a shared campus teach-in and other special events that will lift up the strength of the Butler community."

No word on when the teach-in day would take place.
