TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Friday is the final day of the 2018 hurricane season.

  • 2018 Hurricane Season ends Friday
  • Major storms hit Carolinas, Florida panhandle
  • Storm Season 2018

This was an active season with 15 named storms and eight hurricanes — two of those were major hurricanes, named Florence and Michael.

Florence caused severe damage in the Carolinas after making a late August landfall. North Carolina officials are still seeking nearly $9 billion in recovery aid.

Michael strengthened quickly over the Gulf of Mexico and tore into the panhandle in early October as a Category 4 hurricane.

At least 40 deaths are attributed to the storm and damage estimates are into the billions of dollars.

Recovery efforts continue across the panhandle and in the Carolinas.

Where Hurricane Michael was a wind and surge event, Florence was a soaker in the Carolinas, causing massive flooding that washed out roads, crops, schools, homes and businesses.

In North Carolina, the long term recovery alliance is working in several coastal and river communities helping homeowners navigate time-consuming insurance claims and continue to provide temporary housing.

This week, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper asked Congress for an additional $6.3 billion in funding, on top of the $2.5 billion already spent.

The total damage from Michael could top $4.5 billion.
