TAVARES, Fla. -- The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-0 tornado did hit Tavares Wednesday, causing damage.

A "warehouse-type" building on Burleigh Boulevard collapsed because of potentially damaging winds, according to the Tavares Fire Dept.

The collapse of the building caused damage to a nearby Winn Dixie, and fences in the area.

Reporter Julie Gargotta also says a restaurant called Fish Camp on Lake Eustis saw damage from the tornado. Part of the roof blew off and part of the metal awning was twisted. A sign was also damaged.

No one was hurt.

“We just came to see how they’re cleaning it up, they’re cleaning it up quickly. I’m surprised," said Carol Beranek. “This is the most exciting thing that’s happened in a long time.”

Beranek and her husband, Joseph, had just stopped by a fast food restaurant along U.S. 441 to grab an ice cream cone when it started pouring. The retired couple, who moved to Tavares from South Florida last month, mopped off their golf cart and zoomed under an awning for cover.

“We put the curtains down, got into the cart and then it hit," Joseph explained. “We’re just looking up and there’s debris obviously from this building, swirling up above Winn Dixie's. We watched shopping carts blowing through the parking lot.”

“We’re watching people trying to get out of the store, halfway through their checkout process," said Carol.

The Winn Dixie itself ended up needing a new delivery door and the private warehouse behind the supermarket wound up in pieces, crews using a mini excavator to sift through the mangled mess on Thursday.

Down U.S. 441, the tornado's trail of damage lingered. The storm tossed tires at an auto shop like frisbees.

“Even a small one can seem to do pretty good damage," said Ralph Smith, who owns Lake Tire and Auto. “I’ve been here 31 years and that’s the most damage I’ve had from any storm.”

Next door, the sign at Fish Camp on Lake Eustis restaurant now reads, "Temp closed due to tornado."

Owner Jim Jordan was cooking in the kitchen when the storm tore through and described a frightening scene.

“It just sounded like a freight train, everything started shaking violently. It took us a second to realize what’s going on," he said.

As kitchen staff flew into the dining room, the roof beginning to lift, more than a dozen diners on the wooden patio were scurrying inside as the metal roof buckled.

“It jumped over to the roof above us on the patio and twisted it like a beer can," he explained.

Jordan, who met with a contractor on Thursday, said that he estimates the damage to be at least $100,000. They hope to reopen in coming days, promising to post updates on their Facebook page.

The Beranek's, back in their golf cart once again on Thursday, returned to the Winn Dixie to survey the damage.

“Now it’s fun, but if it had been serious, anyone hurt, it wouldn’t have been fun," said Carol.

FEMA has tips to help you prepare for tornadoes, such as heed warnings and get to a sturdy building immediately.

An EF-0 tornado is the lowest level of intensity on the enhanced-Fujita scale for tornadoes. It includes winds of about 65 to 85 mph.
