Rapper Pitbull was paid up to $1 million last year to promote Florida as a tourist destination on social media.

  • Visit Florida paid Pitbull $1 million to promote tourism
  • The details of the deal were kept from the public
  • Pitbull promoted Florida on social media, in music video

Pitbull posted the contract on his Twitter account on Thursday morning, days after the Florida House of Representatives filed suit, seeking details of the agreement.

"It's been an honor to represent Miami and the Sunshine State. I've taken Miami and Florida worldwide — WAY before any contract, and will dos so way after. I love my home state. When asked to take on a New Year's show, I INSISTED it be live from Florida. #LoveFL since birth…and til the day I die. Dale!" the rapper posted on Twitter.

In 2015, Pitbull partnered with Visit Florida, the state's tourism marketing agency. As part of the deal, the rapper would use the #LoveFL hashtag on Twitter and other social media messages.

Pitbull also filmed a music video for his single "Sexy Beaches" in Florida to promote tourism in the state.

The amount of money Pitbull received in the deal was kept from the public as part of a "trade secret" exemption from his production company, PDR Productions.

The Republican-controlled Florida Legislature wanted the deal to be made public so taxpayers could see how much Visit Florida was paying Pitbull.

House Speaker Richard Corcoran released the following statement after Pitbull posted the contract on Twitter:

"It is unfortunate that it took litigation to lift the veil of secrecy on this particular contract. This was a long unnecessary journey through claims of trade secrets, threats of prosecution, and corporate welfare paid for by taxpayers. The people's House will not hesitate to use every tool at our disposal to protect the taxpayer and ensure transparency is the rule and not the exception in state government."

The contract, which was not renewed by Visit Florida, ran from July 2015 to June 2016.
