DeLand police are looking for the person or people responsible for shooting 30-year-old Akeem Birch outside a convenience store and leaving him there to die.

The victim's sister says she knows what happened and is sharing that information with police.

Octavia Thomas is stunned, shattered and on a mission to help DeLand police find the person she believes gunned down her 30-year-old brother and ran off.

Birch was shot outside the Friendly Way convenience store on South Florida Avenue Sunday night. He was found dead in the parking lot.

"Just left him to die, didn't even, nothing. He was working at this store, he had a car wash going, he was so excited about it, and then for it to happen the way it did, it was unfair," said Thomas.

Her brother was no stranger to the law. A mug shot shows Birch's prior run-in with police.

DeLand police are releasing little information other than to say the investigation is ongoing.

There are surveillance cameras outside the store pointing in the direction of where Birch's body was left, but police are not saying if the cameras are helping them.

But Thomas believes she knows what happened and says the shooter and Birch had an on-going feud.

"He and a guy got in a fight in a nightclub. They've been fighting, and I don't know what the fight is about," said Thomas.

Thomas is sharing that information with police, hoping the shooter does the right thing after gunning down the father of two children.

"I pray that they find the person that did this. I pray that he think about the family and go turn himself in, ‘cause justice will be served," said a hopeful Thomas.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-TIPS.
