A Sanford Police Department officer has been relieved of duty for singing on stage at a concert while on duty in uniform, the department said.

Officer Andrew Ricks attended a concert for the band “Vital Remains” at the West End Trading Company in Sanford on Nov. 13, according to a news release from the department.

A video was sent to Chief Cecil Smith on Tuesday that shows Ricks joining the band on stage for the introduction of the song “Dechristianize.” In the video, Ricks is seen shouting and singing a portion of the song, which includes the statement, “Let the killing begin.”

Smith notified the Professional Standard Section and removed Ricks’ authority to perform his law enforcement duties.

“An incident of this nature erodes the thin fibers of trust which already exist between the community and the police and it will not be tolerated within the Sanford Police Department,” Smith said in the release.

On Wednesday, Ricks’ police powers were removed.

The department says on Oct. 30, Ricks submitted a letter of resignation with a pending separation date of Nov. 20.
