The investigation continues in Volusia County after a man was shot to death by two police officers early Friday morning.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. at a home in the 1400 block of Needle Palm Drive in Edgewater.

The Edgewater Police Department said officers were called to the home for a disturbance and when they arrived they found Trevor Silvia, 34, armed with a one-foot long kitchen knife.  Police say Silvia tried to barricade himself in the garage, but officers followed him.

Investigators said Silvia threatened Sergeant John Tarr and Officer Charles Geiger, so they attempted to subdue him with a stun gun, but Silvia rendered it ineffective. The officers then shot Silvia.

"He pulled the Taser probes out of his chest with one hand and then he raised the knife up and started to move forward towards one of the officers at which time the officers opened fire," said Edgewater Police Chief David Arcieri.

Silvia was transported by helicopter to Halifax Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting which is standard practice in officer involved shootings.

Both Sergeant Tarr and Officer Geiger were placed on paid administrative leave which is normal protocol.
