A shooting at a state college in Brevard County has one person in the hospital.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of Eastern Florida State College in Palm Bay. All classes at the college are now cancelled until Monday.

Police said two people, Amado Contreras and Landyer Contreras, came on campus and confronted a student, Landrick Hamilton. They said a verbal argument turned into a physical fight. With one of the suspects beating Hamilton with a pool cue. Police said Hamilton then went to his car, got a gun, and shot Amado Contreras.

"I saw one guy standing up, in the doorway, and he was stomping and kicking the guy behind the driver's side," said witness Charles Andrews. "Then I heard 'pow' -- gunshot and I grabbed other students and told them to get under cover."

Palm Bay's police chief said Hamilton attends the school as a chemical technology student. The other two do not.

Police say Hamilton was taken to the hospital for injuries that happened during the initial attack. Amado Contreras was shot in the chest and taken to Holmes Regional Hospital. His wounds are not life-threatening. They and Landyer Contreras are cooperating with police.

All three are claiming self-defense.

School leaders say safety is paramount. They are reminding students it is against policy to have any weapons, including firearms, on campus.

The State Attorney’s Office will decide if any of the three men will face criminal charges.
