A Deltona man was killed Wednesday morning after he was shot in the chest while in his backyard.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said around 10 a.m. deputies were called to a home in the 3200 block of Cadehill Drive. When they arrived they found the 69-year-old man, later identified as Bruce Fleming, with a gunshot wound to the chest.

He was taken by ambulance to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said they are working to determine whether he may have been struck by a stray bullet.

The Sheriff’s Office said witnesses told them a neighbor built a shooting range with a raised berm and it’s possible that a stray bullet may have struck the victim.

The man who may have fired the shot has been interviewed by deputies.

Officials later said the shooting was an accident and it appeared the bullet came from a property adjacent to the victim's.

A decision on filing criminal charges will not be made Wednesday.
