The scale tilts back and forth until it shows one pint of blood has been donated. And many other pints will be collected because it’s been a busy day of donations at this Cedars Sinai blood truck in Redondo Beach.

"Hi, hi lovey, good to see you," says Corinne Grace, a local resident whose husband is the beneficiary of some of the donations.

Grace laughs and takes photos with almost everyone that has shown up to donate blood in honor of her husband who needs a heart and kidney transplant.

"We probably couldn’t make it without the support. People have been giving dinners and just wrapping their arms around us and loving us.”

Her husband Eric has been in Cedars Sinai awaiting organ donation since August. To avoid getting his hopes up too high, he tries to keep the expectations low on when he’ll receive his new organs.

"You never really know when it’s coming and there’s no way to anticipate that. The more days you have in doesn’t mean they’re getting closer to an end result, because these donor matches have to be spot on, it’s like fingerprints.”

And finding the right match is something Doctor Antoine Hage is working on as one of Grace’s cardiologists. But to make things more challenging, Grace needs not just one organ, but two, and he’ll need to get them both from the same donor.

"We find it easier and less chance of rejection to have the patient receive both organs at the same time from the same donor.”

So for the Grace family, they must maintain hope and courage as they patiently continue to wait for a heart and kidney.
