Here is how Florida teacher pay compares with other states:

One of the top national teachers unions has a set of numbers and the government has a set of numbers.

The national average salary was around $58,000 to $59,000 using both figures as a range.

Florida fell short and was somewhere in the $46,000 to $49,000 range.

When you take cost of living adjustment into consideration, Florida gets more competitive.

The highest salaries nationwide are in New York, California and Massachusetts.

But they are also very expensive places to live.

Florida shoots up to $51,000 range after the adjustment.

When you add in a $9,000 bonus, those teachers are now above the national average and competitively getting paid as well as their peers.

They are in the top ten — ahead of New York and California — when you factor in cost of living.

The 2018 teacher workforce in Florida, according to the Florida Department of Education, is 176,984.

Therefore, more than a quarter of teachers would see that $9,000 boost.

Another report published this week on cost of living put the Tampa Bay area as the least expensive metro area to live in statewide and in comparable locations around the country.
