ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orlando Police officer is recovering after authorities said the officer was randomly attacked on Thursday afternoon while on crossing-guard duty and a suspect with a history of violent run-ins with law enforcement was taken into custody, arrest records show.

  • James Mossetty is facing several charges

  • Mossetty has a history of run-ins with law enforcement

In a tweet, Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolón confirmed that the officer was attacked while on school crossing-guard duty.

It happened at around 4:20 p.m. in Orlando at the intersection of North John Young Parkway and West Harwood Street, where the officer was working school crossing guard duty when the alleged attack happened, officer Michelle Rogers of the Orlando Police Department stated in a press release.

The officer, who has not been named, was sitting in his marked patrol vehicle when a man allegedly started banging on the car, Rogers stated.

The officer then came under physical attack so intense that the officer had trouble reaching out by radio, Rogers described.

Orlando Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center virtual detectives were able to pull up the officer’s body camera live and see what was happening, which allowed them to update other responding officers in real-time to what was happening, Rogers said.

Once those officers got there and helped the officer under attack, a suspect identified as James Mossetty was placed into custody.

Mossetty is facing multiple charges:

  • Aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer
  • Hindering communications
  • Resisting officers with violence

The officer was checked out at a local hospital for what is described as minor injuries. And Mossetty was also treated at the hospital for minor injuries, Rogers confirmed.

Mossetty has a history of violence with law enforcement, according to criminal records.

A history with law enforcement

On Oct. 12, 2021, Mossetty refused to leave the Orlando Regional Medical Center emergency room after he was discharged and received all of his medication and a bus pass, according to an arrest affidavit.

Once he refused requests to leave and was told that he was trespassing, he was placed under arrest on trespassing charges and booked at the Orange County Booking and Receiving Center on South John Young Parkway in Orlando, according to an arrest affidavit.

On Oct. 16, 2021, Mossetty was at the front door of the Orange County Booking and Receiving Center lobby and refused to leave, according to a different arrest affidavit.

Mossetty was asked by an Orange County Sheriff's deputy multiple times if he was going to leave and he refused, stated the affidavit.

That is when Mossetty “took a fighting stance” against the deputy, made fists and pushed the deputy in the chest with both hands while the deputy attempted to place handcuffs on him, stated the affidavit.

Mossetty began to flee, but the deputy and a correctional staff caught up with him placed him on the ground, according to the arrest affidavit. While law enforcement was trying to cuff him, Mossetty allegedly resisted officers by tucking his arms underneath him, the arrest affidavit stated.

This resulted in a corrections staff member stunning Mossetty in the lower back, which eventually allowed him to be cuffed.

Because he had a small scratch to his left cheek and his left hand was swollen, Mossetty was transported to the Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment, where he allegedly threw a sandwich at a law enforcement officer and tried to kick the person twice in the face while getting his photo taken, the arrest affidavit stated.

Mossetty, 33, was charged with:

  • Battery of a law enforcement officer
  • Resisting an officer with violence
  • Trespassing property after a warning
  • Assault on a law enforcement officer

James Mossetty is facing several charges after allegedly attacking an Orlando Police Department officer at random, stated officials. (Orange County Jail)
