Currently, several state legislatures across the country, Florida included, are considering transgender bans specifically relating to trans women and girls participating in women’s sports.

Some lawmakers think it would be an unfair advantage for a person who was born a male and self-identifies as female to participate in girls or women's athletics because they may have a physical advantage.

Gina Duncan, Equality Florida's director of transgender equality, says the bills have no basis in fact and only serve to feed a political base. In fact, Duncan says there haven't been any instances in which a “transgender athlete was called out for having athletic prowess that was considered unfair on the playing field.”

She also gets deeply personal, sharing her own experience of her transition in this week's Central Florida: Beyond the Soundbite podcast.

Next week, we explore the other side of this issue: In part 2, we speak with state Rep. Anthony Sabatini, whose District 32 covers parts of Lake and Orange counties.
