An Edgewater Boy Scout leader and New Smyrna Beach employee is off the job and behind bars pending an investigation into child molestation and pornography charges. Investigators now believe there could be more victims.

  • Fred Harvey was arrested Saturday
  • Accused of child porn and child molestation
  • Boy Scouts says his crimes were not related to his work for them

Fred Harvey, 56, is now in jail without bond.

Harvey was arrested early Saturday. Investigators said they received a tip in September and had been tracking him since.

Investigators said Harvey's social media activity turned up multiple child porn images and uncovered emails containing pictures of molestation.

He's also accused of molesting a 14-year-old he knew.

Concern is growing as investigators believe there could be more victims. Harvey has been volunteering as a Boy Scout leader for years. The organization has revoked his registration.

“The behavior included in these allegations is completely unacceptable and runs counter to everything for which the Boy Scouts of America stands. While the allegations are unrelated to Scouting, upon learning of these reports we took immediate action to revoke this individual’s registration and preclude him from any further participation in our programs,” Eric Magendantz, Scout executive said in a statement.

The city of New Smyrna Beach's spokesperson said in his position as building maintenance and city parks, Harvey doesn't work directly with children:

"Fred is an employee of the city. His job title is building maintenance. He services any of our public buildings in the city to include city parks. He is also used in the set up and breakdown of special events. He does not have a job assignment directly related to children. He has been an employee with the city since September 2000. He is currently on suspension without pay, pending the completion of an internal investigation."

No one was immediately available for comment at the Harvey residence. His neighbor hopes investigators get to the bottom of this.

"If he's a child molester, child pornography or anything like that, he shouldn't be allowed out," said Thomas.
