BRADENTON, Fla. — When two of the three exits off Interstate 75 in Bradenton are under construction, drivers have to find creative ways to avoid the roadwork and the resulting back-ups.

Many of those commuters are using U.S. Highway 301 in Ellenton, and now it has problems of its own.

Spectrum Bay News 9 viewer Erik Becerra says it's time for officials to look at the issue.

"With the 64 and now 70 ramps being reworked, the Ellenton exit 224 in Manatee County is a complete mess," Becerra said.

State Road 64 is getting a diverging diamond interchange, similar to University Parkway.

State Road 70's reconstruction includes a modified diamond interchange, and the interstate itself will be widened to eight lanes between University Parkway and State Road 64.

All of the drivers on those ramps are looking for a better way to enter the I-75 ramps.

Becerra said the issue is at the traffic signals along U.S. 301 from the outlets through the interstate ramps.

"It starts with the traffic light at 60th Street and U.S. 301 that does not seem to be in sync with the lights at the exit and on ramp to the west," he said.

Becerra said the lights are all out of sync, and it wouldn't be a big surprise to find out that's the case.

Normally lights are timed using either loop detectors in the road, or through camera-sensors placed near the signals over head.

In a big project like this, many times temporary pole sensors are brought in to manage the lights.

They often get moved as construction continues. When that happens, they aren't able to do their job.

Real Time Traffic Expert Chuck Henson has reached out to the Florida Department of Transportation in Manatee County and it's going to have the construction project manager have a look at the sensors to see if they need adjusting.
