PLANT CITY, Florida — A home in Plant City has been hit by cars more than a dozen times.

It was more than 30 years ago when Ethyl Lutz's husband built the home she lives in.

"I don't feel safe from this road," Lutz said.

The home is on Boot Ray Road, where it intersects with Whitehurst Road. There is a small jog to the left at Lutz's house, and it is there where drivers leave the road and go onto her property.

There is a cross marking the spot of a fatal crash at the location a couple of years ago.

"Twenty-one-year old fella was coming down, and he had time to turn, and he hit that big metal pole over there and his car went on fire," Lutz said. "The whole motor went up into the car and he didn't make it out."

There was another crash at the house last week.

A car going 60 mph went through the signs, the concrete poles Lutz put in, through the fence and into her home.

Her sister was standing at the sink at the time of the crash.

Lutz would like to see the county install some rumble strips or speed humps well before the stop sign as an additional way to alert drivers of the "T" intersection ahead.

There has also been discussion of installing a flashing beacon, triggered by drivers approaching the intersection.

Whatever the fix, the city and county with have to work together. The house is in the city, and the road owned by the county.

The lot on the northwest corner of the intersection is empty right now.

Real Time Traffic Expert Chuck Henson said it may be more cost effective for the county to buy it and move the road to better match up with the one in front of Lutz’s house.
