TAMPA, Fla. — This week's Traffic Inbox looks at Interstate 4 and a section of roadway a Spectrum Bay News 9 viewer describes as "cobblestone."

Ann Avinger is worried the condition of the road is going to damage her car.

"I moved to Tampa three years ago and have noticed large patched areas and potholes on the highways," Avinger said. "It feels like driving on cobblestones and I expect the holes to start damaging vehicles soon."

Most of the issues are on the stretch between McIntosh Road and 50th Street in Tampa.

The problems are across about 11 miles of interstate, and according to John McShaffrey with the Florida Department of Transportation, every bit of it is about to be repaved.

"We're going to be repaving all of the lanes on the mainline in both directions, as well as all of the asphalt ramps," he said. "So we're talking almost 40 ramps in that area as well."

Avinger's email to us was timed well, as the work starts Monday.

The repaving of I-4 will also include lengthening the ramps connecting Interstate 75 to I-4, in order to give those drivers more time and space to merge into traffic.

The project will be a bit more complicated than a standard road repaving, however.

In many spots, the state will need to dig down to the very base of the road and re-lay several layers of asphalt. That's opposed to just shaving off the top layer and putting a new one in its place.

The majority of the work will happen during the overnight hours of 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Because of the amount of work that needs done, the DOT says some work may occur on weekends as well.
