BRADENTON, Fla. -- A busy Bradenton intersection is keeping drivers waiting on their daily commute.

For drivers like Michael Kutz, making the turn at U.S. 41 and Cortez Road in a timely manner can mean minutes saved on his way to work.

But lately, he's not been making the light.

"It used to be both turn lights went at the same time, and now they have it, turn light goes after the green has been green for a while. And it just seems like you don't have enough time to get through before it turns red," Kutz said.

Real Time Traffic Expert Chuck Henson visited the location during the middle of the day, when traffic was less than during peak times.

In one cycle of the lights, a truck in the back didn't make it through the light. At 5 p.m., there would be several more cars behind him -- all stuck till the next cycle.

It wasn't always like that, up till a few months ago. Kutz said the turn lanes went first followed by the through traffic.

If he were to choose the old way versus the new way, Kutz has a clear choice.

"I just think that to me the old way was more efficient," he said. "I mean, they must be doing their studies, but I'm not. I haven't done any studies, just sitting in the traffic."

It turns out the state has been studying the location.

"Signal timings are re-evaluated every two years," said Zachary Burch of the Florida Department of Transportation. "In this case we found the busiest movement was the eastbound traffic on Cortez. In an effort to help accommodate that extra traffic, additional green time was added to Cortez Road which will naturally lead to a small reduction for U.S. 41."

The FDOT will look at the intersection again within two years.
