PASCO COUNTY, Fla. -- There is problem along a busy stretch of U.S. Highway 19 in Pasco County involving traffic not stopping for people in the crosswalk.

The intersection of U.S. 19 and Hudson Avenue isn't a standard crossing. Hudson crosses at an angle and as a result creates some unique issues for both drivers and pedestrians.

A stop-on-red sign in the area is of particular concern to resident Larry Jackson.

"Are you supposed to stop and then wait till the light turns green, stop then make a regular right turn?" Jackson said. "And then we see people run through it like the sign isn't even there."

Jackson saw a problem just minutes before talking to Real Time Traffic Expert Chuck Henson.

"I saw a guy crossing at the light and the three lanes of traffic were stopped," he said. "And a guy was coming to make a right turn on to Hudson Avenue, and he just stopped about a foot from hitting that bike."

According to the state, when this section of U.S. 19 was widened, the traffic signals were not increased to show one signal over each lane of traffic. There is no light over the right turn lane.

In addition, the angle of the intersection creates a blind spot for anyone using the right turn lane.

Someone rolling through the stop line might not know there's someone ready to cross in front of their car.

Henson took the concern to Kris Carson of Florida Department of Transportation.

"It is likely the additional signal wasn't added because the current wire-span may not hold the additional weight," Carson said. "We will see if we can add at least another signal over the right turn lane."

The second issue is the blind spot on the crosswalk. The state is looking to have a sign installed as a reminder to drivers why it's so important they come to a full stop at the crosswalk before making the right turn.
