With most of the attention on future SEC talents Antwann Jones and Emmitt Williams, it was Robin Perry that owned the state’s biggest stage.

Perry made 11-of-15 from the field and scored a career high 32 points to lead Oak Ridge to a 71-60 win over previously undefeated Wellington in the 9A championship game Saturday night at the R.P. Funding Center.

It’s the first state title for the Pioneers.

Oak Ridge (30-4) jumped out to a 13-3 first quarter lead but had to withstand multiple runs from the scrappy Wolverines.

A basket by Linton Brown brought Wellington (31-1) to within four with 6:02 remaining in the game but Oak Ridge’s Kaleb Coleman buried a three-pointer on the next possession and the Pioneers were solid from the free throw line in the losing minutes.

A pair of free throws from Perry stretched the lead to nine with 3:57 left in the game.

The senior, who is still hoping for a chance at a scholarship, showcased his talents by scoring in a variety of ways and making important defensive plays. Perry finished four-of-five from 3-point range.

The Pioneers made seven-of-12 3-pointers as a team and shot 51-percent from the field.

Jones was hampered by foul trouble and scored two points. Williams finished with eight and was ejected after picking up a second technical foul for hanging on the rim following a dunk.
