TAMPA, Fla. -- This year for the Tampa Bay Rays has been a season of continuous change, but one constant amidst all of the commotion has been the pitching of Blake Snell.

Snell, entering his third season, has a chance to become just the second pitcher in Rays history to win 20 games in a season. The first and only other player to do it was David Price in 2012.

In an exclusive Spectrum Sports360 sit down with Snell last week, it was one of many topics we discussed.

"It would be amazing," said Snell. "It's something I'm going for but I need my team to be behind me doing what they've been doing for me when I pitch."

The 25-year-old lefty admits it was a wake up call last season that helped him realize how important the game was to him.

"I really didn't know how lucky I was to be in the position I was in, I was like, 'I get to play baseball and I got paid to play, that's cool,'" Snell said.

Things were not "cool" last season, Snell was struggling with control and command issues and was optioned to Triple-A Durham last May where he went 5-0 with 61 strikeouts and earned a call back to the bigs. After six more starts he was sent back to the minors.

"It took me to struggle in 2017 to realize, OK this can be done if you don't take it serious."

With a new attitude and work ethic Snell attacked spring training this year and has been on the rise ever since. It's been a career year for the left-hander, his first trip to the MLB All Star game, 19 wins entering Tuesday's game against the Texas Rangers and he has ranked among the top pitchers in all of baseball in wins, ERA and strikeouts.

"I just wanna be the best me I can be and focus on continuing to do so and continuing to learn."

Snell has three starts left this season, including Tuesday's game in Texas. In his only start this year against the Rangers this season on April 16, he pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed one run in an 8-4 win.

A special season by a special pitcher has developed in a year that has had more ups and downs then a roller coaster. Enjoy this Rays fans, this may not be the norm, but it sure has been fun to watch.
