It’s a balancing act as the city commission works to appease lifelong residents with a growing bar scene.

“There’s some late-night music, but I think it’s just growing pains to be honest with you,” said Jeremy Hutcherson, Cocoa Beach commissioner for District 5. “The city’s got some good growth, a good legacy to build on, and honestly, the noise ordinance will get us in a position to grow smartly.”

Census data shows the population of Cocoa Beach has seen little growth over the past 10 years. However, it is undeniable that the small town hosts plenty of tourists and snowbirds throughout the year.

According to the city’s strategic plan, the population of Cocoa Beach historically has an influx of growth during winter. Data shows the city’s population nearly triples during the winter tourist season.

Commissioners say they’ve received several complaints from long-time residents about the noise. Now, they’re considering restricting noise after 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. Currently, bars can keep the party going until 11 p.m.

Ingrid Llaverias is the manager of Area 142, a bar that opened back in January. She is worried that pushing back the noise ordinance by two hours could be bad for business.

“I think they should listen to everyone, not just a couple of people,” said Llaverias.

Under the ordinance, noise cannot be audible from 100 feet or more from the originating property during quiet hours.

The city commission will discuss the ordinance at 7 p.m. Thursday.
