ORLANDO, Fla. – The Haitian consulate offered their perspective Monday for the first time since seven of their Special Olympics delegates went missing. Six disappeared last week, and the seventh was last seen at Disney this Saturday.

Herwil Gaspard, the consul of the Consulate of Haiti in Orlando, says with 16 medals, this year's Special Olympics was a great one for the island nation, but the fact that seven delegates have still not made it home is a big concern.

“I met personally with the Special Olympics committee last Friday and we were discussing about the situation so we are worried about the situation, the Special Olympics as well,” Gaspard said.

He said this is not the first time Haiti has participated in the Special Olympics, but claimed this is the first time this has ever happened. He said all of Haiti’s delegates, except for the seven that are missing, made it back home Sunday. The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office reports they left their belongings behind and were last seen on Disney property.

“We do not want to talk too much about the situation because there is an investigation warning right now, so we are working hands in hands with the government and also with Special Olympics to know exactly what was happened, what the situation is exactly and to get more information about the situation,” Gaspard said.

Despite the ongoing investigation, he shared they are moving forward as the rest of the athletes are already training for next year.

“We are participating in the Special Olympics and next year it is going to be in Germany and we hope that Haiti will be there again,” said Gaspard.

The consul shared there are certain avenues that investigators are pursing that they do not want released to the public at this time. He said at this point, they are not changing any of their security policies for future competitions.
