BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The Brevard Zoo is trying to select a name for the Eastern bongo calf birthed by Clover in October and is seeking the public’s help.

What You Need To Know

  • The Brevard Zoo wants you to vote on name for Eastern bongo calf

  • The three proposed names are Ginger, Sage or Nutmeg

  • The $5 donation to cast a vote will fund animal care at the zoo

  • Eastern bongos, native to Kenya, are critically endangered

To keep the name similar to her mother’s, the animal care team has proposed three herb- and spice-themed names — Ginger, Sage and Nutmeg. She is Clover's first calf.

Voting will remain open until 5 p.m. Jan. 25. A $5 donation per vote will be used to cover the cost of animal care at the zoo.

Eastern bongo, which are native to Kenya, are critically endangered because of habitat loss and poaching.  Clover and the calf’s father, Sebastian, were matched by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Eastern bongo Species Survival Plan, a program that manages the populations of animals within AZA-accredited zoos to ensure healthy and genetically diverse populations.

The zoo’s bongo family, as well as other animals, can be seen from the zoo’s Cape to Cairo Express electric train.
