BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Data shows coronavirus cases are dropping nationwide, such as those in the Brevard County school district, but deaths are still rising at a time when younger children still are not eligible for the vaccine.

Brevard Public Schools reported 67 positive coronavirus cases from Sept. 21 to Sept. 23, down week to week since this month’s peak of 413 cases during a period ending Sept. 9.

The school district saw the most positive cases of the school year in late August with 784 cases.

Health experts say the summer surge could subside by the end of the year, but that depends on more people getting vaccinated.

"There's still of pockets of vulnerability and COVID is so contagious it finds its way into those pockets of vulnerability,” explained former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb.

Gottlieb expects the Delta wave to have moved its way through the country by Thanksgiving. He says the virus will still be around but will decline to a level that feels more manageable, expecting 20,000 new daily cases as opposed to the current CDC average of 144,000.
