As part of this year's Space Coast Motor Officers' Police Motorcycle Challenge, motor officers want people to learn about someone special they lost not too long ago.

Carl Ring was a longtime supporter of law enforcement, donating K-9 vests, motorcycles and rifles for all Brevard County agencies.

This year's competition is dedicated to his memory.

"His heart was in law enforcement. It's sad we can't have him here," former Brevard Sheriff's motorcycle unit Cmdr. Scott Behringer said.

He may be retired, but Behringer still likes to get around on two wheels.

"When you become a member of a motor unit, you become part of an elite club," he said. "We train hard together, we ride hard together."

He's part of this year's event, which will feature more than a dozen local, state and out of state riders who will be in Brevard County to compete and show off their skills.

"All of us are out here to help each other with set ups, positioning of the bikes, but Saturday it's game day and all bets are off," Behringer said with a smile.

Barb Metzger has been riding for three years, logging more than 10,000 miles, but she's still in awe of the skills on display at th event.

"Very impressive, and I wish I could do the things they are doing," she said.

She's also soaking in the safety expertise which can move from the course to the road.

"That's why I'm here and watching them," she said. "They can teach us a lot."

The Space Coast Motor Officers' Police Motorcycle Challenge started Thursday and will run through Saturday.
