Police said traffic issues are the No. 1 complaint they get.

For the past four years, Robbi Whalen and family have witnessed several accidents near their Degroodt Road home.

"Around the corners there are always crashes," Whalen said. "They just don't have respect for the speed limit, it's a straight road and they just think they can go."

Late Monday, a car careened off the road just down the street from them. The car plowed over a trash can, through a neighbor's yard and rolled over. The skid marks are still visible on the road.

Palm Bay Police said speed was a factor.

"It's only 40 (mph)," Whalen said. "You see people (going) 50-60 around these corners. I can't even take the kids on the sidewalk."

Two sisters were killed April 17 when two cars collided at the intersection of Palm Bay Road and Babcock Street.

"Speed resulted in the deaths of two innocent lives," said Lt. Jeff Spears, who says calls about speeding and traffic issues all over the city are at the top of the list for department.

"They are the No. 1 complaint we receive in this city," he said.

Since the fiscal year began last October, the city has seen 874 crashes, compared to 2,643 in all of 2020.

"We are urging our motorists to slow down," Spears said. "They need to be mindful of cars around them. We need people paying attention."

Whalen has a message for those heavy-footed drivers coming by her home.

"Slow down, all we can tell people is slow down," she said.

The Palm Bay Police Department has a six-member traffic enforcement unit that will be adding more officers soon to address the problems.
