SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — The city of Satellite Beach in Brevard County will become the latest city in Florida to phase out single-use plastic and styrofoam products at its city-owned facilities.

  • Satellite Beach council approved ban unanimously
  • Phases out products over the next 6 months
  • Orlando, other Florida cities have similar ban

The city council voted unanimously Wednesday to phase out the products over the next six months.

City departments will have to develop solutions to reduce the usage over time, while educating workers on sustainability. The plan will impact city employees more first.

Satellite Beach joins Orlando, which in June voted to ban single-use plastic and styrofoam products from its facilities later this year. Other cities in Florida have enacted similar bans.

Seminole County is also considering a single-use plastic ban at county parks and other facilities.

Satellite Beach's city manager says the project is an important part of working toward becoming a zero-waste city, and in line with efforts to help the beleaguered Indian River Lagoon.
