ORLANDO, Fla. — It is hard to believe that another hurricane season is less than a month away. Now is a great time to get you and your family ready in case a tropical system threatens Central Florida this season.

The first full week of May is Hurricane Preparedness Week.

Over the past several days, Spectrum News 13’s team of certified weather experts have been providing some of the things you should consider ahead of time.

  • Some of the action items you and your family should take include:
  • Understanding your risks to wind and flooding hazards
  • Developing an evacuation plan and knowing the evacuation routes
  • Putting together a disaster supply kit
  • Make sure you have the appropriate insurance policies for your property
  • Take time to strengthen your home by trimming trees
  • Ask a neighbor if they need help with storm supplies or home improvement
  • Finally, write down your action plan that you and your family would take if a storm threatens

When putting together a disaster supply kit, you have to think about that you may still be in your home after the disaster or evacuating to another location for safety.

It is recommended that you have at least a three-day supply of and water, if not a bit more. Each person should have access to one gallon of water per day and food that won’t spoil.

Have a manual can opener and emergency tools including a fire extinguisher, battery-powered radio, flashlight and batteries.

Don’t forget pet care items like proper identification, immunization records, ample food and water, medicine, a carrier or cage and leash.

Store important documents in a fire and water proof container. These items should include:

  • Insurance papers
  • Medical records
  • Bank account numbers
  • Social Security Cards
  • Deeds and mortgages
  • Birth and marriage certificates
  • Stocks and bonds
  • Recent tax returns
  • Wills
