VIERA, Fla.-- Drivers in Brevard County are getting a new I-95 exit, but it's also the new design of the Viera Boulevard bridge that brings with it big changes.

  • Viera Boulevard bridge being redesigned
  • The I-95 interchange will feature a "diverging diamond" pattern
  • The $17 million project is scheduled to be completed by June

Right now, traffic moves slowly on the overpass, as only one lane is open. Cars and trucks going east and west must stop for each other.

It's the beginnings of the new diverging diamond project. And for some, it will be a big adjustment.

"I think it will take some getting used to," said Bob Petterson of Melbourne.

He hasn't tried the very different traffic pattern known as a criss-cross yet.

Once finished, FDOT says it eliminates turning left across traffic to get on I-95.

With the changes, vehicles trade sides as traffic from the interstate comes and goes. The intersection only needs two lights to operate.

The new Viera exit is expected to relieve traffic to the north at the Fiske Boulevard interchange and south at the Wickham Road exit.

For Petterson, it means a way to get to Viera's shopping and restaurants much easier.

"Someday we will work up the nerve," Petterson said.

The $17 million project is scheduled to be complete by June.

Another diverging diamond interchange is in the works at the new Micco Road exit.
