ORLANDO, Fla. — A group of students found what some think is a racist display left at an Orlando park.

  • White sheets with eyes cut out left on sign in Orlando park
  • FAMU law students saw them and called Orlando Police
  • Student: This isn't what the First Amendment was written for

The group of Florida A&M University law students saw the display at Lake Rowena Park, near Mills Avenue and Princeton Street.

White sheets with eyes cut out — which the students said look like KKK hoods — were hanging on a sign at the park. The students then called Orlando Police.

GiGi Watts was on her way to a grocery store when she could not believe what she saw on the side of the road, so she stopped.

"Are we at a point in society where you see two KKK hoods and you just keep driving? Is something wrong?" she asked.

Watts said she was learning about the First Amendment in class Monday. She said this is not what the freedom of speech amendment was written for.

"What you cannot do is use freedom of speech as a hate crime. That is definitely not protected," Watts said.

Police arrived on scene shortly after Watts and her classmates called in the apparent hate crime, but they were still in shock of what they witnessed and said they wouldn't tolerate it.

"As a black person, brown person, whatever person, you can’t do that, and I am going to tell the Klan you can’t do that," Watts said.

Police had pulled down the sheets by 5 p.m. and are continuing to investigate.
