OAK HILL, Fla. — The Volusia County Sheriff's Office issued arrest warrants for two teens late Sunday in connection with a shooting that according to the victim's father left his son, 47-year-old Joel Tatro, paralyzed.

  • Sheriff's Office: Shooting occurred just after 1 a.m.
  • Juveniles came to party uninvited, altercation ensued
  • Incident not considered a random act

Warrants were issued for Sylvano Leslie II, 17, and James Powell, 15. They were charged with second-degree murder in the shooting.

The victim's family tells Spectrum News says Tatro was at a campfire at a house in Oak Hill Saturday night. Some people showed up at the campfire uninvited.

According to witnesses, Tatro tried to get the people to leave, but one of them shoved Tatro instead. Tatro shoved back. Witnesses say that's when the person who shoved Tatro pulled out a gun and shot him in the neck.

The uninvited guests, identified by the Sheriff's Office as juveniles, fled the scene after the shooting.

"They shot my son on private property and shot him in cold blood," said John Tatro, the victim's father.

Joel Tatro was flown to Halifax Health Medical Center.

The victim's father said the bullet hit the victim's spinal cord and he is now paralyzed.

"I would say look, I know you're a young man," John Tatro said. "And I pray to the lord Jesus that at some point when you become an adult, or maybe when you're 60 years old, you're going to truly, truly understand what you have done to this man."

The Sheriff's Office said the investigation is ongoing and not considered a random act.
