ORLANDO, Fla. — Thousands came to downtown Orlando Saturday morning to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Barricades and road closure signs went up early for the annual parade, which starts at 10 a.m.

This is the 35th annual MLK parade in Orlando, and this year’s theme is “King’s Vision: Humanity tied in a single garment of destiny.”

Organizers expected as many as 8,000 people to come see the parade.

For people who took part in the parade Saturday, they saw it as important in teaching younger generations about Dr. King's legacy.

“The main thing is being a part of our community and, definitely show leadership to our youth so that they know they can be whatever they want to be,” said Darryl Wingate, who took part in the parade.

This year the annual Women's March will also be happening as part of the MLK parade.

"The Women's March, we're glad to have them a part of us," said Alger Studstill with the Southwest Orlando Jaycees, the sponsors of the event. "We're just glad to have everybody together on one accord."

The parade is hosted by the city of Orlando Mayor's Martin Luther King Jr. Commission, which helps coordinate King Day events across our area. There is another parade in Eatonville, and then on Monday there are number of service events. You can find a list on the commission's Facebook page.

King's birthday was on Tuesday. He would have turned 90 years old this week.
