ORLANDO, Fla. — Kaitlyn Jesionowski recalls sitting in class February 14, 2018 -- she was in the now infamous building 12 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

  • 40 survivors, teachers & parents share their stories in the documentary
  • Documentary will screen at Fashion Square Mall Jan. 18-24

There were the pops of gunfire, and in that moment, the lives of many changed forever.

It has been nearly one year since the attack where a gunman shot and killed 17, but Jesionowski’s mind, like many, remains locked on that day.

“Mostly everything, like the images, the sights, the what-if’s … I definitely feel guilty a lot,” she said.

Jesionowski, now a freshman nursing student at University of Central Florida, is among 40 survivors, teachers, and parents sharing their stories in a new documentary called Parkland: Inside Building 12.

“I thought all of the attention was given to the shooter and the activists,” said filmmaker Charlie Minn. “The activists weren’t even inside of the building. The attention should be on the survivors who were there ducking bullets, getting shot at, watching their classmates get murdered, running, hiding, praying.”

Jesionowski’s friend Helena Ramsay was among the 14 students and three staff members killed. Jesionowski recalls in the film holding Helena’s hand after being shot, reassuring her that everything would be okay.

“The stories coming from survivors are absolutely heroic,” Minn said.

He also admits the film is at times raw and graphic.

“I show actual crime scene video, and that’s so the audience can understand how truly bad these acts are,” Minn said. “If they see the reality of this, that would spark action and change, or at least have a better chance for that, rather than just thoughts and prayers.”

Jesionowski said she plans to spend the date of the one-year mark with family. In the meantime, she said she hopes what happened in Parkland will continue to spark meaningful dialogue about changes needed in policies.

Parkland: Inside Building 12 will screen at Premiere Theater at Fashion Square Mall Friday, January 18 through Thursday, January 24. Show times are 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 9 p.m. daily.

Minn and Jesionowski plan to attend the first few screenings the first Friday and Saturday and hold a question-and-answer session after the screenings.
