ORLANDO, Fla. — The weather has been beautiful and warm to start this January. But this time of the year can be and is climatologically the coolest point of the year for Central Florida.

Our average low temperature in Orlando dips to 49 degrees from January 2 through the January 25 before bouncing a degree back to 50. The average high temperature is at its coolest too, and it is 71 degrees through the January 23.

It is a similar story for Melbourne, Daytona Beach, and Sanford.

Melbourne and Sanford’s coolest normal low temperature is also 49 degrees in January, while Daytona Beach’s is 47 degrees.

These temperatures are the 30-year climatological averages. Of course, temperatures can be much colder than the upper 40s or the exact opposite, as we have seen for the start of this January.

You may most recently remember January 2018, which brought two days where the low temperature dipped below 32 degrees in Orlando. The first was 31 degrees on January 4, and the second was 27 degrees on the January 18.

Last year was the first time in four years Orlando felt temperatures at or below 32 degrees during the month of January.

Cold temperatures like these can fall outside of January too. For example, on March 4, 2013 Orlando dipped to 30 degrees, and it was the only time that year Orlando was that frigid.

In 2012, Orlando dropped to 32 degrees on February 12.

The average last day for Orlando to drop to 32 degrees or colder is January 29. The earliest to ever feel these temperatures is November 21. This happened in 1937, and the latest on record is March 17, which was in 1916.
