A Brevard County software developer spent his afternoon creating a new app to help you connect with fresh produce.

As the price for fresh fruits and vegetables are on the rise, people are heading to farmers markets to get a discount.

Robert Delgado created the “Homegrown Market” app because he had an excess of duck eggs and wanted to give them away but didn’t like the idea of using sites like Craigslist.

He wanted to make it easier for people to find the fresh fruits and vegetables without having to pay grocery store prices. Also, he wanted to help reduce food being thrown away.

“One of the issues farmers have is food waste, if they can’t sell everything, it just goes to waste,” Delgado said.

Myra Beacham, who founded Salter Path Spices in the 1990s, sells her homemade goods at local farmers markets and on the app.

“I don’t put any kind of chemical not even anti-caking,” Beacham said.

On average at a local grocery story, romaine lettuce is going to cost about $2.49 but at a farmers market it’s about $1.49. Unlike regular stores, there’s room to negotiate the price you want to pay.

According to Delgado, with 500 hundred downloads and counting, more people are eating fresh.

The app is free to download on Android. The IOS version is set to launch in the next few months.
