A nearly 20 year Brevard road project is finally complete, easing congestion in the mid-part of the county.

  • Barnes Boulevard project finally complete
  • Road saw widening, drainage improvement, utility work

The $22 million Barnes Boulevard widening effort began with the engineering phase in 2000.

Work began in 2014, widening the one mile stretch from Murrell Road to Fiske Boulevard near I-95 from two to four lanes.

Drainage improvements, utility work and landscaping brought the total to $35 million.

“Traveling on the road is much better now. And for the residents and businesses along the road, the signalization has been an improvement,” said Dave Henderson, former Rockledge Assistant City Manager. “We are real pleased with how it turned out.”

Part of the road is named for Dave Henderson, who spearheaded the road upgrades.

Funding for the project came from gas taxes, impact fees an FDOT grant, the Viera Company, plus the cities of Rockledge and Cocoa.
