A Lake Mary High School teacher has completed an epic feat: a swim from Sanford all the way up the St. Johns River to Jacksonville.

But there’s no catching up on rest yet — Luther Davis was back at school bright and early Wednesday, the morning after completing the 164-mile swim.

Davis got plenty of high-fives from his students upon returning to school, and he wasted little time sharing every detail about his trip. Davis set up maps across lab tables and replicated the route he took on his trip.

“This whole thing has been an opportunity to follow water from my house to the Atlantic Ocean,” Davis said.

For a week and a half, friends and family followed Davis with boats and kayaks, sharing updates with videos on social media.

Students such as Megan Sevard joined Davis when he began his journey, hiking from his Longwood backyard to near Lake Jesup. He kayaked several miles over Lake Jesup to avoid the numerous alligators there.

Then, he jumped into Lake Monroe in Sanford, and from there, swam 164 miles to Jacksonville.

Davis faced storms, cold water and wildlife. He noted on maps where alligators were spotted near him.

“Every green dot here is an actual alligator, some in the water some on land,” Davis said to enthralled students.

His lesson for students is one of conservation.

“We’re also all partly responsible for the health of that river, and the decisions we make have certain consequences,” Davis said.

Sevard took away another life lesson.

“There’s going to be setbacks, but if you wait it out and overcome it, you can do anything,” said Sevard, a Lake Mary High School junior.

“It was a remarkable journey, and I’m proud to share it,” Davis said.

Davis’ students asked him whether he has another great feat in mind. He said he’s thought of some other adventures but won’t pursue anything else right away.

He said he’s still enjoying the accomplishment of the trip he just finished.

“I have a sense of relief, but I also have a sense of excitement," Davis said. "I finished this thing.”
