Lake County Commissioners voted Tuesday to let residents decide on a fuel tax.

  • Commissioners vote to add fuel tax to November ballot
  • 5 cents would be added to every gallon of gas pumped
  • The money would then be used for transportation

In a 3 to 2 vote, commissioners voted to add the question to the November ballot.

If the ordinance passes, an additional 5-cents will be added to every gallon of gas pumped in Lake County.

That money will then be used for transportation.

"Obviously those of us who live and drive through the county recognize the fact that our roads need work," resident Tom Madden said.

Commissioner Sean Parks says he doesn't think there's been enough public discussion about it. He's one of the two commissioners who voted against it.

"Until I hear more support for it and more support from the business community it is something I'm very concerned about it right now," Parks said.

If approved, the fuel tax would go into effect in 2020 for 10 years.
