Gov. Rick Scott has signed bills requiring nursing homes and assisted living facilities to have backup power sources.

Scott signed SB 7028 and HB 7099 on Monday in Fort Myers.
The bills mandate that the backup power source be able to keep the facility at 81 degrees or cooler for at least four days.
The legislation was prompted by the heat-related deaths of 14 people in a sweltering nursing home in Broward County after it lost power after Hurricane Irma.
