Lake Nona Boulevard east of Boggy Creek Road has its fair share of bicyclists, but that stretch of road is also an area essentially surrounded by nothing but cows and pasture.

  • Speed limit along portion of Lake Nona Blvd is 30 mph
  • Pedestrian paths, bike lanes may contribute to speed limit
  • City of Orlando says it’s in midst of traffic study

In this week’s Traffic Inbox, one viewer, Michael O’Keefe, raised an unusual question:

”Why is the speed limit so low in the area, and can’t it be raised?”

The speed limit along Lake Nona Boulevard east of Boggy Creek Road is 30 miles per hour, and that is despite the lack of anything out there!

The pedestrian paths and bike lanes might have something to do with it because of its frequent usage. Plus ‘Medical City’ is right down the road, which begs for future expansion.

When we started looking into it, we realized that this question was received with good timing. This stretch of Lake Nona Boulevard lies in the jurisdiction of the city of Orlando.

When I contacted the city last week, they actually said that as we speak, they are in the midst of conducting a traffic study of the area.  So while nothing is set in stone yet, the ball is rolling for possible change — so stay tuned!

Thanks for your question, Michael!
