A standoff in Marion County ended with a home engulfed in flames and a man in custody.

  • Paul Powell set fire to home, deputies say
  • Powell has not been yet charged, according to deputies

Marion County Sheriff's Office deputies found 49-year-old Paul Powell barricaded inside a home in the Florida Highlands at 7 a.m. Sunday.

Powell told officials he was armed. After hours of failed negotiations between law enforcement and Powell, deputies say he set the home on fire.

"SWAT operators breached a window of the home and saw Powell setting a fire within one of the bedrooms. At that point, Powell exited the residence and was detained and secured by law enforcement," stated the Sheriff's Office in a news release.

Powell was taken to University of Florida Health in Gainesville for his injuries.

They say he had an outstanding warrant for domestic battery.

Powell has not been charged yet.
